About Us
The Fundación Astros del Futbol is named as a tribute to the legends of soccer who were instrumental in the creation and continued support of this organization. In Spanish, the word "Astro" when used in sports refers to a superstar - an athlete who rises above the rest. The Fundación Astros del Futbol strives to "rise above the rest" and be among the premier charitable organizations in sports by truly serving those communities where need exists.
HISTORY: Fundaciónn Astros del Futbol (Astros Soccer Foundation) was established as a nonprofit public benefit corporation in early 2006 in San Diego, California. Our federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status designation has been submitted and is currently pending approval.
VISION: Fundación Astros del Futbol seeks to promote and strengthen a sense of community pride by fostering a positive atmosphere in the sport of soccer and other community-building recreational and social activities.
OUR ASTROS TEAM: The Fundaciónn Astros del Futbol team consists of 7 Mexican World Class Soccer Legends, which includes Luis Roberto Alves (Zague), Manuel Negrete, Adolfo Ríos, Missael Espinoza, José Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre and Martin "Pulpo" Zuñiga. These Astros soccer all-stars are donating their time and efforts to promote and support Fundación Astros del Futbol through media tours, fundraising activities, and special events.
CURRENT ACTIVITIES: Fundación Astros del Futbol is continuing to develop and expand the organization through our various partners and sponsors. FAF continues to work with various special events such as tournaments, exhibition games and community organizations to begin rolling out our programs of equipment donations and field refurbishment and development.
STAFF: In 2006, the Fundación Astros del Futbol hired Manuel M. Rubio as it's permanent Executive Director. A native of the San Diego/Tijuana region, Manuel Rubio has had over 13 years experience in the nonprofit and advocacy fields. He has held several key positions with various agencies at the local, state and national level including a variety of direct service agencies, research and advocacy organizations and charitable foundations. Manuel is also actively involved with several community organizations including being a graduate of the LEAD San Diego, Class of 2006, and serving as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the San Diego Prevention Coalition, an organization whose mission is to coordinate prevention efforts combating substance abuse in San Diego County. Among several other activities, he has previously served as a Vice Chair of the San Diego Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee, Advisor to the San Ysidro Multicultural Scholarship Foundation, and Board member of the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative. He has a B.A. in International Relations from the University of San Diego and a Master of Public Policy degree from Georgetown University in Washington DC.
PARTNERS: Fundación Astros del Futbol has several partners including its funders, community partners, and other soccer and sports related organizations. Financial support for FAF has come from Heineken USA - through Copa Tecate, Allstate Insurance Company, and Latino Sports and Entertainment.
In the community, FAF has worked with The San Diego Nomads, The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, The City of Tijuana, Esperanza Academy in Oakland, Hispano Soccer League in Chicago, and the Windy City Soccer League in Chicago.
